OK, it's true. In our land of steady habits, we have always called a person from within the Diocese of Connecticut to be our Diocesan Bishop.
As a Search/Nominating Committee and Standing Committee, we sense a strong desire to be open to the Spirit in a new way. We want our next Bishop to be someone who can take from our rich history and culture and can also help us be more open to breaking out of entrenched habits and customs.
In focus groups, members of the diocese named the possibility a person outside the diocese offers for a broader perspective, with fresh ideas, and experiences in different ways of addressing parish life as well as occasions of conflict.
At the same time these same groups articulated the advantage of electing someone known to us, with connections already established.
As Jesus put it in St. Matthew's Gospel, "Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old (13:52)."
So our question to you is, "Do you sense a call to be the next Bishop of Connecticut?"
If so, we invite you to consider our hopes for the future as they arise out of our strengths and challenges. We seek the best candidates, wherever they are from.
